1 month in cloth

January 24, 2011

It’s hard to believe that it has been just over a month since we started with cloth diapers. What the heck was I doing with my free time when I wasn’t reading CD blogs or stalking Spot’s Corner. What? Those words don’t mean anything to you? You must not know a FuzziBun from a Good Mama.

I didn’t either. There is a whole world out there that I didn’t know about. So much cuteness to be purchased that I almost missed out on. Thank goodness, I know better now. My husband is less thrilled that I have a new passion to throw money at. When he gets itchy about it though (or about anything I buy) I just say, “tell me again how much your Raven’s season tickets are?” and all is good.

A month ago my stash consisted of three BumGenius 4.0’s. When I burned through those on a given day, I moved on to disposables. It didn’t take me long to purchase enough to ensure that Caroline would never have to wear a disposable under my care (daycare is still a work in progress- no thanks to my husband*). It didn’t take long after that for me to develop an obsession and acquire more than we realistically need but not enough to satisfy my desire to try everything.  Thank goodness cloth diapers re-sale well.

As of today my stash consists of:

5 BumGenius 4.0’s

3 FuzziBunz one-size

2 GoGreen Pockets

1 Happy Heiny one-size

1 Kawaii one-size

1 Grovia cover and 2 inserts

1 Flip cover and 4 inserts

6 prefolds

Accessories: 3 HempBabies inserts, 2 Snappis, cloth wipes, PlanetWise wet/dry bag

Coming soon: 1 Sbish OBV fitted, an SBish wool cover and a used Good Mama fitted. I am so excited about these, they are the only “higher end” items I have purchased so I can’t wait to see if they are really better. I am especially excited about the wool cover.

I’m thinking of selling the Happy Heiny and maybe one of the BGs. I really like the BGs but there are some other things I would like to try (more fitteds) but feel guilty buying more without getting rid of a few first.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t have bought the prefolds.  I don’t find them difficult to use but they are just too bulky. Maybe when Caroline is bigger I will like them better. Luckily they weren’t expensive and have many other uses. I also wouldn’t have both the cloth wipes from a CD store. The 4 for $1 baby wash cloths from WalMart work great.

Functionally, they work fantastic.  At night she wears a BG or the Kawaii stuffed with a microfiber insert and a hemp insert and we’ve never had a leak. She is not a heavy wetter but the inserts are fully soaked in the mornings.  The only leak we have ever had was when I left one on too long ( a quick errand turned very long) and she was sitting in her carseat.

I truly love cloth diapering. Everytime I put one on Caroline, I feel good that that is one less disposable that will be sitting in a landfill for 500 years. Her room never stinks the way it did when there were dirty disposables in the Dekor in there (We didn’t follow directions and dump the poop from disposables). Changing diapers is now fun! Even when you are changing the diaper of the angry octopus. I can’t wait to decide what to put on her next! I never felt that way with disposables. I recently told my husband that I felt bad that I was hogging all of the diaper changes these days. He assured me that it is not a problem.

*A future post will be about my husband and cloth diapering.
